Urban3 was contracted by the Iowa Economic Development Authority with data and support from the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization to conduct a property tax and sales tax analysis of the four-county Des Moines region. The region (Polk, Dallas, Madison and Warren counties) is an agricultural behemoth, producing more corn than then entire countries of Cambodia, Ecuador or Iran. Farmers understand utilizing the acre as a measure of efficiency, and Urban3 applied the same principle with the value per acre method.
The analysis clearly demonstrated the potency of Downtown Des Moines on a variety of metrics, from property and sales tax to employment figures. Development trends from the region’s settlement through the 20th century were also quantified and mapped on a decade by decade timeframe. All results were visualized and presented in ESRI’s Storymap format.
